This morning,on the CBS Early Morning show, they had a segment on Ageless Dressing with author Christine Schwab ("The Grown-Up Girl's Guide to Style: A Maintenance Bible for Fashion, Beauty, and More").
The interview was good and you can read a summary at the following link...
Dressing Stylishly In Middle-Age
I wish, however, that the the video was posted, because for me, that's where the whole segment faltered. The brief fashion show (they showcased 3 outfits), featured models, 2 of which were not even 50+, and all three of which were tall and lean!
I know this is a horse I continue to beat, but it can't be helped. The reality of growing older more than not brings with it at least some additional pounds - along with a a shifting of body shape. What was firm ain't firm no more! And that fact very much impacts what will now look good on you and what won't.
For me, and I suspect for many other women as they cross that divide from 40 to 50, is the biggest fact that I've had to face up to and take into account as I try to dress this changed body. And I just don't think it's particularly helpful to not have at least the different silhouettes of the post 50 woman if you are going to speak honestly about how they can best move stylishly into this new phase of their lives!
Like I said, the actual interview was pretty good - but the fashion show drained some of the credibility for me. Anyway, check the article out - you won't have the fashion show experience to 1/2 ruin it for you! ; - )

Forth and Towne...
Otherwise know as Dead Store Walking, is having a summer (aka, pre-closing sale)...
DON'T bother going to their website to get an idea of what you might go looking for...it's CLOSED!!!!!
Okay....I'm so bitter about this that I think I need a time out to put together a sane comment on what I think about the whole Forth and Towne closing and what it says about how both retail and the fashion world in general think about the post 40 woman.
Anyway.....
On the real tip -- if you've got a Forth and Towne within striking distance, get on over and grab some chic grownup clothes - before the body's cold!

Okay - The Chicest Knitting Bag....
Ever!
Okay confess. Like so many women these days, young and old, there's a good chance you've either gone back to, or taken up, knitting and/or crochet. (I remember my mother as a mad crocheter in my youth, working those hooks with speed and a casual confidence while keeping one eye on us and the other on her soaps!)
It's creative. It's comforting. It's Zen.
But sadly, the bags available to keep your colorful yarn, tools and projects in process in are, well shall we say, a bit dowdy?
Well despair no more! (That is if you have been! : - / ) Because a young woman named Jordana Paige has created the most chic knitting bag ever...
Jordana Paige
Here it is in all it's glory...
The Knitters Satchel - $89.00
Inside that lovely outside is a well organized space...
And a well appointed front pocket....
Along with Ocean Blue shown here, the bag comes in 5 other sleek colors - my second favorite is the Deep Red...
I'm presently an occasional crafter, so you know what I was thinking when I saw this bag - heck I'd use that as a work bag as well!
The bag is PVC, which probably makes it next to indestructible (Yeah, yeah, leather is lovely, but sometimes you just need a bag that can take a kickin' and keep on tickin' - without scuffs!), the snap closure gives it just the right touch of vintage style and it comes with it's own zippered sidecar (okay, removable zipper pouch).
What more can the on the go crafter/working gal ask for? ;-)

Speaking of designers.....
One more example of their disconnect with the real world...
Over at Coquette a reveal of Diane von Furstenberg's spring line of dresses...
DVF Style: Print and Pattern
Now DVF is famous, and rightfully so, for designing one of the most versatile dresses ever - the DVF wrap. It's a style so friendly to just about any woman's body and age that it is a staple that can have a place in every woman's closet. And the fact that it is "reproduced" across all price points and sizes makes it one of the easier fashion icons to own.
But what the *&@#%! is up with the hemlines! Of the 6 dresses pictured only one - the Kyle - has a hem lenght at any woman over 40 could live with right out of the box - and keep her dignity that is! (Through actually, I think the Cassidy has a better neckline for the 50+ lady! Can these two dresses be spliced together? ;-) )
I'm sure for her more affluent customers, who are most likely ladies of a certain age and who will be buying the ready to wear versions, those hemlines will be dropped down to something reasonable. But if you are of an age and not going to the ready to wear salon to get your togs, where does that leave you?
You can, of course, go to a tailor and get the hem adjusted - if there is enough extra fabric in the hem to accommodate that!
And really, if you are already spending 300 - 400 dollars for a dress (I'm not sure where the very young women, for whom these hems would be quite fetching, are who are buying these dresses for these prices - but then I don't claim to be all knowing! ;-) ), shouldn't it a least be of a reasonable and universally flattering lenght?

Speaking of the issue of what we wear.....
Get thee over to What a Woman Needs In her Wardrobe for two excellent posts that speak to the issue of style and the individual...
Wednesday Ramblings...
Fashion is Stupid
In both Ms. Allie states some hard truths -- and give some great advice on how to deal with them!
Anyway you slice it, it all comes down you this: You HAVE to dress - you might as well find a way to do it that both presents you in the best way possible and is true to who you are.
No not easy, I know - but, damn it, you ARE worth it! ;-)
(And by the by - while you're over at WAWNIHW - check out her post giving good advice to stay at home moms: Mall and SAHM. Honey, those tips can work for anyone! ;-) And her list of suggested shops is right on and will work as well for the 50+ gal!)

More on "Age Appropriate" Dressing....
Back on May 19th, I referred you, gentle reader, to an article at the New Times that spoke to the issues women over 40 face in trying to dress both "age appropriately" and stylishly. (Older, Better, but Harder to Dress).
Subsequently, I've come across two takes on this article:
Over at To Fat for Fashion Miss J posts...
The Age Old Question
Over at Daily Fashion Report see the post "Rage" of the Age" (Note: You'll have to go down the page somewhat to find it...)
To me, these two posts, both of which which, by the way, make some very good points, symbolize the disconnect between the people who are "in" the "fashion" business and the majority of folks who actually wear clothes!
While Miss J. muses on the very real issues in dressing all women who don't meet the "fashion" world's standards face, the post on the DFR, is basically dismissive of those very real issues (along with a cheap slam at people who struggle with weight issues!).
Even through the DFR article actually does have some good tips on how one might address post 40 dressing, the whole attitude reeks of someone who has never actually shopped with a woman who didn't either, 1. Come to the party with a body no less than a size 6 and, 2. Didn't have all the money in the world to spend (In fairness, she does make the statement that good pieces can be found for less than designer prices - but she doesn't seem to realize that while that is a "true" statement as we say at work, it is no easy matter - I speak from experience! Which, I believe, was the whole point of the NYT article!).
Case in point - her example of ageless style is a woman named Iris Barrel Apfel, who's clothing style is presently being honored in an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute – Rara Avis: Selections From the Iris Barrel Apfel Collection. You can get a feel for the lady and the exhibit in this article from Panache Mag:
Wardrobe of a Lifetime
The article is a good one and just reading the interview with the lady in question reveals some approaches to building a wardrobe that anyone can learn from. I especially love her comment on accessories - I totally agree with her on the value of accessories in keeping a very basic wardrobe fresh and interesting.
But still, note this - she is plenty thin and has plenty money!
Maybe that is the biggest issue with the fashion business. Like politics there's too much money in it - from the point of view that designers and those that report on fashion spend most of their time with the monied classes and very little with the people that actually support their business - the folks that buy their "cheaper" clothing lines and never ending accessories and fragance lines where the real money is made.
To see what those folks think and face when trying to find clothes post 40, check out Miss J's post and the open discussion attached to it.

Target Keeps on Keepin' on....
Showing the wantabees how design for the masses is done!
I don't usually pay a whole lot of attention to Target's Go International lines - frankly they are designed for women much younger than moi.
But I have to say that the new Temperley London line holds some promise for ladies over 20...check out the preview on The Budget Fashionista's front page!
I think the right over 50 figure could pull off either dress and there are possibilities for the pants and 2 short jackets if you play it just right!
And while the Patrick Robinson line is definitely a 20 somethings line, even an old bird like me can sport his oversized tote for those beach/park outings with the kids/grandkids/friends...
Patrick Robinson Medallion Print Tote Bag - $29.99
I love this print - and while he's going for an Agean vibe in this line, to me it has a real French Country toile feel!
And last, but not least...I think Target may just have surpassed themselves with their new Devi Kroell for Target handbag line.
Get thee over to Shopdiary for the pics:
Devi Kroell for Target
Now personally, I'm no fan of snakes or anything made out of them! But if these bags look near as good in person as they do in the pics -- I might just be tempted! (It is fake snake after all! ; - ) )
I'm especially drawn to the cutch and pochette - simply elegant! And more to my point - ageless!
As I said, we'll see how they look under the harsh lights of our local Target - but there's real potential there for Target to provide yet another dose of cheap chic!

The Abaete for Payless Summer '07 Collection....
Is up online!
Abaete for Payless Summer '07
Now I actually saw these shoes yesterday and yes, they are every bit as cute in person as they are in the pictures! I remember being somewhat disappointed when I actually saw the first Abaete Payless collection in the store - to me they looked as cheap as their price.
But this summer collection looks anything but - maybe being patent helps. Or maybe, Abaete is getting into the low price design grove. Which ever it is, the shoes look great. Also wonderful is the fact that these lines always offer both a high heel style and flats - shoes for every foot AND every budget - how can you lose?
My favs:
Chambers Pump Candy Pink $25.00
Okay no, with my bad feet I can't wear it - but that doesn't stop me from lovin' it!
And wait there's more! It also comes in white....
With just the right summer dress...growl! ;-)
Now back to reality....
Carnegie d'Orsay Red - $20.00
Too cute with the potential of being comfortable as well - a win-win! Oh and it comes in white and black as well.
Gansevoort Tote - $24.00
Now I am no fan of the recent clear handbag/tote trend. Damn it, the whole purpose of a purse is to hide your mess! : - /
But if you feel you must show your business to the whole world, I think this tote more than does the job and with more style than some of the more expensive versions! And really, do you think you should be spending more than 25 bucks just to embarrass yourself?
So for no more than $25.00 you can give your summer shoe/handbag collection an energy boost!

Over at $50 Suit Ms. Tamara has an excellent post on what to look for when determining whether or not a garment has real "quality"....
Mark of Quality: Buying Clothes that Look Pricey
Having read her guidelines, these are rules that should apply to whatever you buy to put on your bod - regardless of price.

More tips on wearing white pants....
Over at You Look Fab, the subject of "to wear or not to wear" white pants has come up again. YouLookFab's take is - YES with a capital Y - width of hips no exception!
Do White Pants Make You Look Fat
Personally I think the answer to that question is yes - but check her tips out yourself and you be the judge....She may have convinced even me to at least try on a pair! ;-)

And by the way, that grey QVC shirtdress...
Never happened!
I tried to buy it - but the website kept looping me back to the same page over and over again when I tried to put in my zip code!

Check out their post on the Celi - part of that never ending attempt to help us organize all that stuff in our handbags and the many electronics we now carry in them!
Celi for My Celly
I skipped over to the website and it is very cute - and I like the fact that it can be worn 4 different ways!
It might still prove to be a bit small and I'm a bit leery of the $60.00 price tag - but if you're looking for something to pop your cell and a debit card in to run a few errands in the neighborhood, this could be the answer!

Check out Chadwicks.com....
Yeah you heard me right. Chadwicks.
I was clued into Chadwicks many years ago by a collegue at work. She always wore the best work basics, nothing fancy but clean lined and well fitting. When I asked her wear she got her clothes, she told me Chadwicks. I checked them out and even brought a couple of things from them over the years. And as my butt got bigger, I started checking out their plus size sister, Jessica London.
But over the years, the style of clothes at Chadwicks, well frankly, got worse and worse. They seemed to be stuck in a 70's time warp of long jackets and one too many fluorescent colors!
(Sister Jess, by the way, is STILL suffering from that! Riddle me this - why is that so many purveyors of plus size dressing are firmly convinced that plus-size women want to dress as a sherbet cup? : - / )
Well recently, the word on the street (Well at least from one of my shopping goddesses, The Budget Fashionista in this post Cheap Chic: Chadwicks Town and Country Tote
) is that Chadwicks is finally going to get back in the fashion game by getting some real designing talent to start creating their clothes. I admit, however, that, great source not withstanding, I was sceptical.
Well it appears that Chadwicks really is trying to get back in the game. A look at their latest catalog (yes, I'm still on the mailing list - hope springs eternal!) does show a change of offerings for the better!
A few of my favs:
Dresses:
Printed Shirtdress - Misses and Petite - $59.00
I love the bold print and the modern, simple lines of this dress!
Pleated Crepe Dress - Misses and Petite - $59.00
I'm not a huge fan of crepe and, yes it's polyester - but I like the sleeves, the color and the unusual pleating detail - definitely worth a look!
Laura Clement Flared Linen Shirt Dress - Misses - $49.99
If I still had my size 14 body - hell, my size 16 body! - this Chi-town girl would buy this dress in a New York minute! A couple of thick wooden bangles and just the right sandals - honey you could not talk to me! ; - )
And I'd pair it with the following jacket:
Laura Clement Linen Safari Jacket - $49.99
Or at least I'd try to - looking at it, there might be too much belt action going on for these two pieces to work together! But the jacket with a dark chocolate brown or black pencil or A-line linen skirt - growl!
And last, but not least...
Openwork Cotton Top - Misses - $14.99
One of the challenges that just about every woman faces as she gets older is the fact that the upper arms just don't always show themselves at their best in sleeveless clothes. I love the laser cut-out detail on the sleeve of this simple top - shows a bit of skin while giving some cover to the "jiggle" show:
Now don't get me wrong - Chadwicks has not totally given up their old ways by any means! But they are obviously in recovery - let's hope it continues!
Now if someone would just do an intervention over at Jessie L.'s!

Hop over to The New York Times Fashion and Style Web Page...
For an interesting, if elitist, article on the issue of "age appropriate" dressing for the over 40 woman....
Older, Better, but Harder to Dress
The elitist part? They only talk to and about women who can afford to buy designer togs!
But, when you get past and over that, the issues described are pretty much the same ones that every woman over 40 ends up facing - how to find something that won't make you look and feel older than you are.
Many of the points made in the article are right on - especially about the need for good tailoring in your clothes once you've passed a certain age. Let's face it ladies - all the exercise in the world, while very good for you, will not give you the tone and definition of a 20 year old in many parts of your bod! Finding the right kind of tailoring details is particularly challenging for those of us who can't afford a $1000 plus for a dress or jacket - the article hits the nail on the head regarding the lack of good tailoring in most mass produced garments.
Don't pass on the slide show that is available on the left of the article - the outfits shown give great ideas that, with a bit of shopping patience and relentless honesty about your particular body challenges, can be reproduced for a reasonable price.

Mother of the Bride - or Groom!
In a earlier post, we got the bride, bridesmaids, groom, groom's men - heck maybe even the father of the bride and groom outfitted for a song!
As ever, mom gets everyone else ready before she sees to herself.
But now it's your turn! And the main rule of thumb - don't overshadow the bride and don't look dowdy yourself!
So in that vein here are a few possibilities for the big day:
First hope on over to Spiegel.com where they have a whole primer on wedding wear:
What to Wear to a Wedding
While aimed at general wedding guests, I thought just about any of these outfits would be lovely for the mother of the bride or groom as well. My two favs:
Total Outfit = $158.00
Sadly the above only comes in Misses and Petite sizes.
Total Outfit = $228.oo - $258.00
Come one, come all for this one - Misses, Petite and Women's sizes welcome!
Over at Ann Taylor:
Liberty Jacquard Jacket and Pencil Skirt - $356.00
I'm not mad for the color on this outfit for a wedding, it would be better in a warm cream color or a pale silver or blue -- but I do like the idea of a tailored suit - very chic for the moms!
Beaded Bolero Jacket and Long Gown - $496.00
Once again, not wild about the color. But if you want to go the formal lenght route a very nice silhouette.
And, of course, Ms. Ann only does Misses sizes! :-p
But speaking of the formal route - over at Norstrom.com they are definitely ready to hook you up! They have a whole Wedding Shop covering the gamut of the wedding party with a section just for the Mother of the Bride or Groom
They offer a wide range of sizes, styles and prices so do go on over and check them out. I'll just throw out a couple of samples from their collection:
Cachet Dress with Beaded Jacket - Reg $188.00, Plus $208.00
Cachet Iridescent Organza Skirt Set - Misses and Petite $168.00
Yes I know - that brown tone again. But the slimmery fabric and the cut of this outfit makes this one a winner for me in this shade! But if you just can't see yourself in such a dark color at the wedding this outfit also comes in a lovely blue, and a spring type lilac.
Alex Evenings Bead Shantung Dress with Jacket (Plus) - $186.00
Classy!
So no excuse for not looking fab while you're beaming with pride in the pictures! And congratulations on shepherding your darlings to this happy day!

Speaking of IT bags.....
There is simply no more iconic "IT" bag than the Birkin.
And I finally saw one in the wild just yesterday!
I don't know about the two coasts, but here in Chicago in the great Midwest, we don't see too many Birkins strutting their stuff with their owners on the street. Not even on our Park Avenue - the Near North shopping district. In fact, and I've worked in the area for many a year, I've never seen even one until yesterday. Maybe it's a sense of discretion or just plain Midwestern good sense that says "$20,000 +? That's a car price - not a bag price!"
Still, I confess, my heart couldn't help skipping a beat when I realized that the tote on the arm of the woman crossing the street towards my sister and I was one of the infamous (opps, that's famous) Birkins. I'm pretty sure it was the following one:
Rouge VIF Ostrich
But I have to say that, like meeting some famous celeb, I was not as impressed as I thought I would be by the bag itself. To be honest, when I first saw her across the street, I thought it was one of the almost equally iconic Jelly Kellys that were widely available a few years ago - the fun, cheap "inspired" version of the bag.
But closer up it looked to be the real deal. I have to say that basically it just looked like a big gaped mouth tote bag with it's top tucked in. That was due, I believe, to one of the glaring faults of this iconic bag, and it's sister the Kelly - there is no easy way to get your stuff out of it without leaving the bag more or less open! Because of the suitcase type flap over and those straps, inevitably they end up being carried something like this:
NOT the ideal if you're trying to make sure your stuff is not simply lifted out of the thing!
Still, I must admit, there was a lot of whispering going on between me and my very less than impressed sister (in all fairness, she is not a bag person and the thought of some handbag going for 20K + borders, for her, on being a mortal sin!) regarding the bag - and the very, shall we say eclectic way the owner was dressed! (My sister speculated that perhaps, having brought the bag, she couldn't afford better! Personally, I think she was doing a Carrie Bradshaw turn having simply mis-matched different designer looks from her closet!)
Dressed for it or not, she was the one carrying the Birkin and I was the one cradling a Franklin tote wristlet - so who's getting the last laugh here? You make the call!
Disappointment or not, for this bag fancier it was the fun sighting of a lifetime!
And trust me, with all my reservations regarding the design of this bag, if someone (preferably a charming older gentleman, exquisitely appointed) walked up to me and handed me a genuine Birkin (preferably in black, red or peacock blue) for my very own - well let's just say I won't be turning it away! ; - )

All I can say to this....
Is Thank You Tim, Thank you.....
Tim Gunn - Just Say No To The IT Bag
Actually, I don't think any of the ladies "of a age" who are reading here will need to be told this. But it's great to hear someone in the business of "Fashion" talking plain common sense!
Well done Tim! Well Done!

Issac M does Bridal at Target....
There are probably more than a few of you out there that have daughters and sons about to leap into the - hopefully - happy waters of matrimony. And that leap these days can be, from everything I've read recently, a pretty expensive proposition!
So who other that Target and their premiere guest designer Issac Mizrahi would you expect to step up to the line with a budget conscious line of bridal wear for the bride, the groom AND the wedding party:
Issac Mizrahi Bridal for Target
The dresses appear to be lovely, if simple and the bridesmaids dresses are at least as good as the stuff you see in bridal salons -- and in many instances better! (Having been a bridesmaid twice, I speak from experience!).
There is even an offering of evening wear for the guys!
My biggest criticism on the whole attempt is that there's no love being shown to plus size brides - get with it Target!
Another quibble, you can only order online. Target, if you want to sell dresses to brides, at the very least have samples they can actually see and finger in the store!
Yeah, yeah, I see the eyes rolling. A wedding is the occasion of a lifetime, blah, blah, blah.
But for a bride without all the resources in the world or one that's already $50,000 dollars in debt from college, these dresses can offer a stylish way to tie the knot - and still afford cake afterwards! ; - )

Okay, QVC....
Is not the place I would normally think of when it comes to buying clothes....Which admittedly is probably just a comment on my own ignorance.
Anyway, I happened to be channel surfing this morning and came across QVC - and they are having a fashion focused day today. And low and behold they showed the following jacket/dress that I really like:
Dialogue Stretch Linen Blend Long Shirt Jacket
It comes with a white tank:
Dialogue White Tank
I've been looking for some light grey pieces to add to my wardrobe for the summer -- kind of my replacement for white (see my post on white pants!). And this looks like a real possibility - I like the idea of the white peeking out from the light grey - very fresh looking.
The other thing I like is that they are offering it in petite as well, in both misses and plus sizes - a boon for me as on the bottom I'm both plus and petite, a challenge needless to say!
At around $40.00 bucks, I think it's worth a try - it will be interesting to see what the actual quality of the fabric is.
I'll let you know how it turns out! ; - )

Summer is on the way....
And so is the dilemma of white pants!
Just for the record - now that my backside is what it is, I would ONLY wear a pair of white pants under pain of death (and believe me, the option of death would be seriously considered) - or if I wanted to show Star Wars on my butt!
That being said (or gotten out of my system, however you want to put it!), I realize that there are plenty of 50+ ladies out there that can still put on the snow-colored pants without immediate humiliation.
For those of you who can, but still have a few issues with how to do it to best effect, get yourself over to Wardrobe 911 for some handy tips on how to tame them:

Over at the Sartorialist....
Perfect example of how the simplest outfit can be kicked up a notch with a punch of color
On the Bike...Blue Shoes & Black Dressing, Berlin
Just that bit of blue makes the whole outfit interesting!
Important tip to remember, as you may, like I have, started gravitating to a sutler color palette as you've gotten older. A touch of color in the shoes or the purse could be just the thing the old gray mare of an outfit can use to give it life! ; - )

Humm...Interesting Bag Concept....
As I was meandering around the web, I happened upon the following handbag...
The Butler Bag
Here it is in all it's glory:
Not the most beautiful bag I've seen I'll grant you. But here's what has the potential to make it glorious:
Talk about organization!
I'm not sure how I would feel about having all my stuff in little plastic sections --but I know how I feel about digging around in a purse trying to find something I KNOW is in there! I HATE it! So I definitely understand the issue their attempting to address!
Like I said, from a style perspective, it might not be the best - but if you're looking for a hard core, weekend errand running bag with the kids or the grandkids in tow - this could very well fit the bill! And in leather at a start price of $95.00 (there is a larger version for $150.00) it could be money well spent!

Now THIS bag just might be worth $1250!
As anyone who reads here somewhat regularly knows, I LOVE handbags! My Achilles heel in this love, however, is the fact that I loath the idea of spending a rent payment or more to buy one! Needless to say, it poses quite a challenge to this handbag lover!
But if I was to consider dropping that kind of heavy cash on a bag, it would probably be something like this...
it's a drawer, it's a clutch - It's Superbag!
Yeah that's right -- if I'm going to spend that kind of money, that bag had damn well better be more than just a bag! Admittedly, it's more a piece of luggage than a handbag -- but I really like the concept!
