A bit of Oscar Fashion Fun.....

We'll be good and sick of hearing about who wore what at the Oscars tonight by Tuesday morning....

But just for a bit of fun skip over to Style.com where they asked 10 current designers to create their dream dresses for this year's nonimees...

And Our Nominees Are..

Over at Wardrobe Oxygen....

Ms. Allie reflects on how to make style truly our own...

A New Look on Fashion

In thinking about the issues brought up in this wonderful post, it occurred to me that women need to start thinking in terms of "mindful" dressing. That, to me, means dressing according to both your tastes and your lifestyle.

This will mean putting aside the current focus on what some random celeb is wearing or carrying now or what the so called "Fashion" press and elite declare is the style of the moment and putting a laser focus on what you are wearing and carrying now! You maybe surprised to realize that, while your present wardrobe may not have all the style you might desire, it probably still says volumes about what types of clothes you have been inclined to spend your dollars on -- what you, yourself really like when it comes to what you wear.

I'm certainly finding that to be the case as I struggle to clean out my closet (yes, I'm finally tacking THAT job - and I'll be posting on how that's working for me at a later date!). While the clothes I'm tossing or giving away may be too small, worn out or just plain out of date, watching my past style choices parade before my eyes as I sort through them is proving to be an unanticipated education on what my past and current self likes to wear - in other words, my personal style.

What have I discovered so far? That there is a surprising consistency of style in my choices - I aways sort of thought that my closet was something of a patchwork of styles but I find that is not the case. And,if I used a style icon to define the types of things I've purchased, it would be some mixture of Kate Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn and a dash of Jackie O. I won't go into detail (I'll save that for another post) but I will say that it's been interesting!

Try it yourself -- you may find that you're pretty comfortable with what you already like. Yes you might need to change up some of your color choices, work more diligently on fit issues and admit to yourself that you're going to have to find another way of dealing with your narrow shoulders than linebacker shoulder pads...oh wait, maybe that last one is my issue....

My point is that I will bet you will find that your choices have a certain logic to them that makes sense in the context of you're own tastes and what you need your clothes to do for you in your life. That's not to say that some of that can't use rethinking - everyone can use the infusion of a fresh approach on a regular basis - but you may just find that your confidence level increases a bit as you think about why, for better or worse, you have purchased what you have in the past. It can definitely help you think more clearly about what you purchase in the future and how it fits into your life and thus to take real control of your fashion life!

From The Sartorialist....

Winner of the Sartorialist Award....

Love the colors, love the textures, love the shoes...And that hair! Talk about a statement (Okay, I'm not really sure what statement that might be - but she's not afraid to make it! ;-))!

What!!!!!!!.......

Okay. Just this morning I was telling my sister (as she was slipping on this great kimono sleeved sweater from Old Navy...

how I felt that Old Navy in many ways provided better design choices for both women of an age and plus sized women than many a store that purports to cater to either group...

When later I see this bombshell....

Second City Style - News Flash! Old Navy's Young Prez Steps Down

Old Navy struggling? This is NOT what I want to hear! Not from the Gap Corp who gave Forth and Towne the unceremonious boot - and they were actually making money! (And no, I have NOT forgiven them for that! :-p )

I hope they don't bale on Old Navy as well...not when it is able to provide outfits like this...

For Misses sizes....

For Plus Sizes....

Here's hoping that the Gap can right the ship - and that they give Old Navy enough time for that to happen! :-/

(And while their at it -- how about some plus sized lines in your Gap and Banana Republic stores - punks! :-p )

Jungle Fever!....

I think Baghaus has finally infected me....

Giraffe Print Belted Tote - $47.00

Giraffe Print Lock Satchel - $43.00

Giraffe Print Sling Pouch - $42.00

I'm not a big fan of animal prints - but something about these Giraffe printed bags has really won my heart!

And bags like this are the perfect candidates to purchase from a moderately priced line like Baghaus. They're "trend" bags - a fashionable style for this spring and maybe next but a look that will probably at some point have to be retired in favor of the next trend. You don't want to spend a ton of money on a bag like that!

However, 50 bucks to give your spring wardrobe a taste of the incoming (well actually, the on-going - I think this was a trend LAST spring too!) safari look - hey that a gal can live with!

My fav?...

Giraffe Print Madrid Tote - $50.00

Believe it or not, I have the exact right outfit to match this bag up with for spring!

Speaking of Spring Dresses....

As anyone who reads here fairly regularly knows, I have not in the past been a big fan of Jessica London and it's take on what plus size women want to wear. In the past it's been a sherbet heaven (or hell if you share my opinion) of too long skirts and shapeless dresses.

However, of late they have been stepping up their style...case in point...

J.L. Studio Print Dress - $59.90

When I saw this dress in the catalog, my jaw dropped - I LOVE it! The print is great playing on the floral theme that we seem to be destined to see a ton of this Spring without being too flowery. The cut of the dress is going to make the best of a plus sized lady's figure. This one is an absolute winner!

Linen Blend Cap Sleeve Dress - $39.90

Sheaths are a classic shape and this one with the empire defined waist is a great one for the plus sized woman. The length is perfect and I also love the print - it's got the animal print flavor without going Peggy Bundy on us!

Top it off with the following jacket and you can take this outfit from work right to dinner...

Modern Cropped Blazer - $39.90

J.G. Hook Pinstriped Faux Wrap Dress - $59.90

This one is sort of shirt dress meets wrap dress - but I think it works. Great for work.

Way back in the distant past....

Well last year about this same time....

I did a post on the ever classic shirt dress....

Spring Ode to the Shirt dress

Well it looks like the shirt dress remains one of THE staples for this spring as well...

Jane Birkin Tramples

Besides the great lesson on how to break in a Birkin bag (Language barrier aside, I LOVED it!), Jane Birkin looks great in her casual wear...now THAT'S how to be 50+! ;-)

Speaking of Marc J.....

The Chicago Tribune has an article on him today.....

Marc's over it -- Designer Marc Jacobs emerges from tabloid fires hotter than ever

All his personal issues aside, I think that he and his business partner Robert Duffy are a couple of the smartest and more far-sighted minds in the fashion business today. They have seen clearly what Isaac M. saw many years ago - that there is a desire for good design across the economic strata if only it can be made available at the right price point.

The only difference seems to be that at the time Isaac took it on the chin (and to a certain extent still does - just see some of the responses to his just cut deal with Liz Claiborne)for daring to make a deal with Target to bring his clothes to what the fashion intelligentsia obvious felt at the time - and many probably still feel -- are the undeserving un-washed masses.

Marc J., thankfully, seems to be escaping that for now -- probably because the idea of designing up and down the price scale is just old news now.

Still I don't see a lot of designers approaching this strategy with the kind of clear, unapologetic intent that Jacobs and Duffy are. I would suggest, in a world where dollars are becoming tighter and tighter, that could prove to be a major mistake.

Marc Jacobs Fall 2008 RTW....

You know you have an interesting personality on your hands when the lead headline for his collection is the fact that he managed to start the runway show on time! ;- )

And the collection isn't half bad either....

See the whole thing here....Marc Jacobs

I hope to God that this is not a jumpsuit! But I include it because I like the cut.

I like the way he moved away from all the solemn colors everyone else seemed to be showing for fall. In fact, he just about goes Easter for Fall!
